DeKalb County senior citizens get access to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores and more thanks to a local program supported by Northside.
Northside Hospital is a partner with the Interfaith Companion and Ride Express, better known as I CARE. It’s a nonprofit based in Decatur that provides free transportation to DeKalb County residents 55 and older.
“We are very proud of our partnerships with Northside Hospital to provide free transportation to seniors of DeKalb County to the medical appointments, prescription pickup and grocery shopping service,” I CARE Director Tom Simon said.
“Our caring and compassionate volunteer drivers, who use their own vehicles, provide our free transportation to the seniors we serve — including seniors who are patients at Northside Hospital.”
I CARE dates to a 1997 task force formed to discuss the lack of affordable transportation for senior citizens. The nonprofit was founded a year later.
“Our relationship with Northside goes back many years and our collaboration efforts and their support have resulted in thousands of seniors being provided with crucial transportation patients needed for their health and nutritional requirements,” Simon said. “I CARE’s mission is designed to enhance and promote the quality of life, independence, dignity and overall health of those seniors served.
“We thank Northside for partnering with I CARE in our mission and their commitment to the health and well-being of the community in which we all live.”
