Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy now available at Northside Gwinnett

Northside Hospital Gwinnett is the latest Northside facility to offer robotic-assisted bronchoscopy for patients who have suspicious lung nodules requiring tissue sampling (biopsy).

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer (both small cell and non-small cell) is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the U.S. Approximately 238,340 new cases are estimated in 2023.

The Ion endoluminal system from Intuitive features an ultra-thin, ultra-maneuverable catheter that enables physicians to biopsy hard-to-reach nodules deep within the lung. Additional benefits of the minimally invasive technology include increased accuracy, fewer complications and quicker diagnosis and treatment.

The new technology is available through Northside Gwinnett’s Lung Nodule Clinic, which opened in 2022.

“This technology provides us the ability to biopsy much smaller nodules, deeper in the lungs with much better localization,” said Dr. Prasad Garimella at the Lung Nodule Clinic at Northside Hospital Gwinnett. “This safe and accurate technology helps us save more lives by detecting lung cancer at an earlier stage.”

Northside Cherokee also began offering robotic-assisted bronchoscopy with Ion in early 2023.

Northside Hospital Lung Nodule Clinics provide a coordinated approach to timely lung nodule evaluation and treatment and includes a multidisciplinary team of pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, medical oncologist, radiation oncologists and radiologists. Clinics are located in Canton, Lawrenceville and Midtown Atlanta.
