Northside Hospital recently expanded its robotic surgery program with the addition of two new da Vinci 5® surgical systems at the Gwinnett and Cherokee campuses, further advancing access to minimally invasive surgical care across the health system.
The investment enhances Northside's ability to deliver advanced surgical care for patients with cancer and other complex conditions by bringing the latest robotic technology closer to the communities it serves. The additions bring Northside's robotic surgery fleet to 32 across its locations.
The da Vinci 5 is the latest generation robotic-assisted surgical platform, offering enhanced visualization, precision, dexterity and tactile feedback to help surgeons perform complex procedures with greater precision and control.
The technology is designed to enhance the capabilities of the surgeon’s eyes and hands beyond what the human body allows while helping patients experience less pain and faster recovery times.
"The da Vinci 5 platform represents a significant advancement in robotic surgery," said Dr. Michal Hubka, medical director of thoracic surgery at Northside Hospital. "This technology enables seamless collaboration between our campuses, facilitating coordinated, team-based care for complex thoracic patients. Our thoracic surgery team brings a proven track record of more than 2,500 robotic operations, and the da Vinci 5 platform represents a powerful extension of that expertise."
At Northside Hospital Gwinnett, the da Vinci 5 system is initially supporting minimally invasive thoracic and lung surgeries, including procedures for patients with cancer, while also serving other surgical specialties for both oncologic and nononcologic conditions.
At Northside Hospital Cherokee, robotic-assisted procedures are performed across a wide range of specialties, including general surgery, colorectal surgery, gynecology, gynecologic oncology and urology. Robotic technology is also utilized in orthopedic and neurological specialties.
“Having the latest technology with the da Vinci 5 gives our patients the opportunity for the best surgical outcomes,” said Dr. Grant Wolfe, a robotic surgeon with Northside Cherokee Surgical Associates. “The new system has improved feedback and increased control that allows more precise movements with less tension. It can also increase the number and types of minimally invasive surgeries that can be done locally in our community.”
Among its newest capabilities, the da Vinci 5 platform allows procedures to be livestreamed securely, enabling surgeons around the world to observe and collaborate in real time. The system also automatically stores recorded procedures in a secure cloud-based environment, creating new opportunities for surgical education, quality improvement and clinical collaboration.
The addition of the da Vinci 5 systems reflects Northside Hospital's ongoing investment in advanced surgical technology to expand access to innovative care and improve the patient experience.
