Stephanie Gunn, a 61-year-old sarcoma survivor, shares her incredible journey of faith, resilience, and triumph over cancer.
After discovering a lump on her right shoulder over a decade ago, Stephanie postponed seeking help due to fear and lack of insurance. It wasn’t until 2022 that she finally sought medical attention and was diagnosed with sarcoma.
Reflecting on her experience at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, Stephanie recalled, "Once I was diagnosed and had to start the journey of having the radiation, I pulled up to Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, and I was like, am I dreaming? Is this really happening?"
Throughout her 25-day radiation treatment, Stephanie placed her trust in her medical team, including Dr. Peter Possert and Dr. Donald Beringer, who assured her every step of the way. "They assured me that I was going to be OK. They walked me step by step in understanding what it was going to take," she says.
Stephanie’s determination and faith carried her through the toughest moments, even when she lost some range of motion after surgery.
“My determination was still that I’m more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus. Physical therapy is mind over matter,” Stephanie said.
Today, she encourages others to face their challenges head-on and not to let fear hold them back.
“Anyone that’s facing any type of challenge … don’t hold onto that with fear,” Stephanie said. “We have to have a good quality of life that we desire to live.”
Stephanie’s story is a testament to the power of faith, the importance of early detection and the exceptional care Northside Hospital Cancer Institute provides.
