Palliative medicine is specialized medical care available to patients at any age and any stage of a serious illness. Their team provides guidance thru education on stroke trajectory and prognosis to help prepare for the future. They facilitate compassionate and empathic communication to help patients and families with complex medical decisions.
Palliative medicine is different from hospice care in that patients do not need to give up curative treatments in order to receive it. Hospice care is meant specifically for those approaching the last stages of life. Patients can ask their doctors, nurses, family and caregivers for a physician referral for a palliative medicine consultation.
