PET/CT Services

What is PET/CT?

PET/CT combines the functional information from a positron emission tomography (PET) exam with the anatomical information from a computed tomography (CT) exam into one single exam.

A PET scan detects changes in cellular function – how your cells are utilizing nutrients like sugar and oxygen. Since these functional changes take place before physical changes occur, PET can provide information that enables your physician to make an earlier diagnosis.

A CT scan uses a combination of x-rays and computers to give the radiologist a non-invasive way to see inside your body. One advantage of CT is its ability to rapidly acquire two-dimensional pictures of your anatomy. Using a computer these 2-D images can be presented in 3-D for in-depth clinical evaluation.

The PET exam pinpoints metabolic activity in cells and the CT exam provides an anatomical reference. When these two scans are fused together, your physician can view metabolic changes in the proper anatomical context of your body.

How Does the Procedure Work?

To begin the procedure, a small amount of Radiopharmacutical is injected into your bloodstream. Radiopharmacutical used will depend on diagnosis.

After the injection, you will wait approximately an hour, while the injected material is distributed throughout your body. During this time you will be asked to rest quietly. No reading, use of cell phone or tablets is allowed. Listening to relaxing music is allowed.

Then, you will be asked to lie on a table that passes slowly through the scanner which resembles a CT scanner. The PET/CT scan should last between 30 and 45 minutes.

  2. Bring a copy of your most recent CT, MRI & PET/CT images and reports with you. (If not performed at Northside)
  3. Arrive 30-45 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to allow for registration.
  4. Please expect this procedure to take approx. 2 - 3 hours from the time of arrival to time of departure.
